Laurent Julliard

I have been in the computer and software industry for more than 15 years now. I spent 7 years at Hewlett-Packard mostly in the R&D Lab of the HP Network Division. I joined the research organization of Xerox in 1994 and I'm still working there so it must not be a bad company after all ;-)

From 2000 to 2003, I was Mister Open Source for Xerox. I managed to convince the Xerox top management to pay attention to the Open Source phenomenon. One of my most prominent contribution was to deploy push for the adoption of Open Source methods and culture inside Xerox, a 60,000 employees company where opportunities for software re-use are enormous and under-used. This gave birth to a Sourceforge-like platform called CodeX which is now deployed throughout the Intranet and also used by some other large companies. I'm based in Grenoble/France but I travel to the United States quite often for my job.

Linux

I use Linux on a regular basis both at work and at home (this server runs on a Linux box) and I try to promote the use of this excellent and free Unix reimplementation as often as I can. Over the past few years I have given many presentations and talks about Linux especially to public and private companies in the Grenoble area.

I am somewhat proud of having started using Linux almost from the very beginning (0.12). At that time I wrote a couple of drivers for some network cards commonly available in the very first PCs produced by HP. Back in 1995 I was the founder of GUILDE, the first French Linux User Group along with Daniel Veillard.

I was also the driver behind the "Journées Linux de Grenoble" jointly organized by the INRIA Rhône-Alpes and the GUILDE Linux User Group in 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2003. The 2003 edition was on "Embedded and Real Time Linux".

I try as much as possible to develop only free software but I'm rather agnostic about how it's called. I must say though that my preference goes to the GNU GPL license.

• Ruby: I have used many programming languages in my carreer (C, C++, Smalltalk, Java, Perl...) and 3 years ago I discovered the Ruby language.
  Ruby is by far the best language I have ever used. It is extremelly popular in the Asian countries, originating from Japan, and I strongly recommend you spent some time looking at it. A good starting point is the Ruby Garden
  
  • I'm a member of the core team of the FreeRIDE project, a cross-platform integrated development environment pour Ruby
    
  • I wrote the RIGS, a Ruby interface to the GNUstep Foundation and AppKit Libraries.
  • I'm also spending some time on rbXPCOM the Ruby interface to the Mozilla component framework XPCOM.
    
    
• GNUstep : GNUstep is an attempt to write an Free implementation of the OpenStep specifications defined by Next, Apple and Sun back in the nineties. A remarkable set of specs that are still being used almost unchanged in Mac OS X.
What I did:
• I contributed some code to Gorm a clone of the famous NextStep Interface builder.
• I also managed to make OpenStep for Intel run on VMware. Look at the detailed instructions here.
  
  
• Savannah: As a side effect of my activities in Xerox I also contribute code to the Savannah Project because both Savannah and the Xerox internal source sharing initiative share the same code base (SourceForge 2.0).

• For HTML authoring I use the Mozilla Composer but I often "retreat" to Xemacs, my favorite editor for all sort of editing (text, programming languages). I particularly like (X)Emacs transparent file access over the network. TRAMP works over SSH and is my favorite one.
• I have spent some time on Mozilla XUL and XPCOM lately. IMHO, it is a very promising development platform.

I enjoy playing tennis, riding bycicle with my family, writing code and populating our sweet home with as many Linux box as possible :-).
